A Message From Our Chairman

Welcome to!  Homepage of the American Hunting Basset Association. Our goal is to continue the work of improving this proud ancient breed of hunting hounds. We do this through our registry, our system of field trials, and

A fact unknown to many people is that the Basset Hound was bred to hunt. Over the years, as hunting has declined in popularity, many Bassets have lost their age-old skills. Our associations goal is to not let this happen. We don’t want this breed to degenerate into a bunch of overweight couch potatoes and lose their unique talents.

The AHBA sanctions family-oriented, no-kill field trials where Basset Hounds can compete at the job for which they were bred (and are quite good at.)

Although we believe strongly that the right to hunt is a fundamental human right, we also recognize that many people are opposed to hunting. Participation in the AHBA Basset events allows both sides to enjoy their hounds without compromising any strongly held principles. The fact that many of our top field trial Bassets were rescued from animal shelters and now live their lives in an environment of responsible pet ownership with plenty of wholesome outdoor exercise is a testament to the positive effect that this organization is having on the breed.

If you own a Basset and would like to join in this effort, just contact us and we’ll be glad to help. If you don’t own a Basset and would like to find out what you’re missing, there are breeders and kennels listed here and any of them would be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.
